The summer months, hot days, and the wonderment of the recessional predicament that beleaguered all of our vendors certainly have turned! Today, 11/22/09, was proof that the Saugus Swap Meet is a bustling marketplace and value minded shoppers are returning by the droves!
Each week in the last few months we have seen an increase in shoppers and vendors!

Sure hope you had a great market day and we so appreciate your continued business! You are part and parcel of our family of vendors.
All the best to all of you during the holiday season!

Sincerely,
Terri Burbank

It is fire season again in southern California, and the blazes have covered the area with smoke for over a week now. The "Station Fire" started in the La Canada area, well on the other side of the San Gabriel mountains from Santa Clarita and has scorched about 150,000 acres as it spread (more than 200 square miles). While the fire's starting point is not really close to Santa Clarita, it did eventually crest the mountain and ran down the other side to Acton to the north and east of us, so a base camp for fire fighters has been set up in Santa Clarita Central Park.

Well, the 13 pounds of cherries we picked a week ago were gobbled up by wife in 5 days. So we returned yesterday to pick more. Arriving early with the morning fog still sitting on the mountains, it was cool and a bit windy, but a beautiful morning.

We filled 3 buckets with 13 1/2 pounds of rainier cherries, and filled 2 stomachs with a few pounds more. Since they do not use any pesticides at Northside Cherries, you can safey eat them right off the tree. The cherries were plumper, juicer and sweeter than the Saturday prior, just as I expected they would be.

My younger son came by last night and reported to me that it looked like at least 1/3 of the cherries were already gone. I know my wife ate quite a few yesterday afternoon, but didn't realize she'd been such a pig!

I suspect they will be open one more weekend since the many of the trees in their grove have branches still filled with cherries. You can check their website or call them to verify their schedule for this season. I think there's a pretty good chance that we may be back there again next Saturday.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney eventually decided not to charge the boy, since there was no evidence of intend and he was under the age of 12 at the time of the incident.

It's now June 2009, and the swap meet business has slowed considerably over the past few years. Many of the vendors here gave up as the customer traffic fell. And with fewer vendors, there are fewer shoppers. Each side of the buy /sell equation feeds on the other. and when both diminish, it's not a good cycle.

The economy has probably hurt the swap meet, just like retailers have been hurt. However, I think it has more to do with the fact that we now have 3 Walmarts, a Sam's Club, a Costco and a KMart within a 3 mile radius, along with a shopping mall. There are more choices in the city than existed before.

The swap meet managment has done some things over the past few months to try to bring attendance back in. More advertising. Better food choices. And they've now opened on Saturdays, too. But we are busy enough Sunday - Friday that we don't plan to come on Saturdays. and apparently in the first couple of months, most vendors and customers are staying away, too.

We've been able to survive here because this is just a sideline sales channel for us. People find us here and then began buying regularly from our local office/warehouse. And since we have items that wear out and need to be replaced from time to time, we still have a regular following of repeat customers here.

Last week, we did not come to the swap meet due to a family emergency. I heard that business overall was about the same as usual.

Today is a very slow day at the swap meet. I am actually typing this on my laptop at the swap meet right now. The weather is nice enough. It's definitely more hospitable than the gloomy week we just finished. But there just aren't enough people with money in their pockets. Things are that way all over, I guess.
